Is NCERT Enough for the CUET Exam?

The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) has quickly become one of the most competitive exams in India, deciding admissions to top central and private universities. With more than 13 lakh students preparing every year, one common doubt always arises:

👉 “Is NCERT enough for CUET preparation?”

The freshly revised CUET syllabus builds on the 12th-grade CBSE curriculum, which makes NCERT books the go-to starting point. They cover fundamental concepts in a simple, exam-friendly manner. But with the changing exam pattern, higher-order thinking skills, and competition heating up, the real question is: Do NCERTs alone guarantee success?

Let’s break it down.

📌 Why is NCERT Important for CUET?

  • Nearly 50–60% of CUET questions (especially in domain subjects) come directly or indirectly from NCERTs.
  • NCERTs explain concepts clearly and concisely, making them easy to revise and apply.
  • Subjects like Accountancy, Economics, History, Political Science, Biology, and Chemistry are heavily NCERT-dependent.

💡 Pro Tip: Don’t just read the main text. Pay special attention to side boxes, “Did You Know” sections, glossaries, case studies, and in-text questions. CUET often frames direct questions from these overlooked parts.

By mastering every line of the NCERT, you can build strong conceptual clarity and confidently solve most MCQs.

❌ Why NCERT Alone is Not Enough

While NCERT forms the foundation, CUET is not a board exam—it’s a competitive, MCQ-based test. Success requires more than just concept clarity. Here’s why:

  • Coverage → Around 60% comes from NCERT, but the remaining 40% includes application-based or higher-order questions.
  • Other Sections → English and the General Aptitude Test (GAT) are not covered in NCERT at all.
  • Practice Gap → NCERTs don’t provide enough MCQs, assertion-reason, or case-based questions for practice.
  • Speed & Accuracy → CUET is time-bound; you must practice solving quickly under exam conditions.

So, while NCERT is necessary, it’s not sufficient.

📚 Other Study Material You Should Use

  1. Previous Year Papers (PYQs) & Mock Tests

    • Helps you understand the exam pattern and difficulty level.
    • Builds speed and exam stamina.

      2.Coaching Support (Optional, but Useful)
Coaching can provide structure, doubt-solving, and expert guidance.

  • Example: CUET PRO (by SRCC graduates) has delivered top results—AIR 1 in both 2023 & 2024, with nearly 80% of students placed in top colleges in India.
  • Benefits: Expert mentors, structured notes, regular mocks, and a strategy-focused approach.

📢 Important Update for CUET 2026 Aspirants

  • Class 11th Economics (especially Microeconomics) is now part of the syllabus.
  • Don’t restrict preparation to Class 12th books only. Class 11th + 12th NCERTs together build the complete foundation.

So, NCERT is essential but not sufficient—think of it as your launchpad, not the full rocket.
